The struggle for natural resources is as old as human civilization. The Sooranad agitation was part of the agrarian movement in Kerala which was struggling for social change. At the end of the fourth quarter of the last century, the peasantry and workers of Sooranadu, which had been oppressed under feudalism, exploded.Protests intensified when landlords auctioned off a pond and canal where ordinary people made a living by fishing. Four policemen were killed in the clashes. The ensuing police chase is part of history. AP Kalakkad was a student during the Sooranad agitation.
